|
|
I tried this on a few other forums and chats in the past, and usually great interest happened, but not much was ever completed by the deadline.. all for good reasons (couldn't leave urban life long enough to complete the challenge, work, family, didn't hear about it until it was nearly over, etc), so I figured I'd offer it here, but with a much broader timeframe.
Starting today (Tuesday October 20-something) and ending on December 31st 2010 (over a year from now), we are all challenged to complete at least one shelter. This is aimed at everyone, newbies, greenhorns, senior members and even the Big Bossman Himself. The rules are simple;
1- It must be made within the timeframe, that means none of the shelters we've shown before here or elsewhere. Use the honour system guys, no sneaking in photos of shelters you've not shown before!
2- The shelter must be at least 50% natural materials. That could mean; Fully natural shelter, wood/pole frame with man-made materials covering it, modern material frame with natural coverage. This is the key rule. I love my tarps set up with paracord, but the goal here is to get us all playing with our natural surroundings.
3- It must be slept in at least once, and an honest report given. If the shelter was awesome, awesome. If it filled your face with rain and snow all night, awesome, because now we all have something to learn from
4- Photos and or videos are a must. If you can't get pictures, or video, detailed sketches and your word that it existed will be accepted. If that don't fly... maybe you should get a friend to come out to get the pictures.. if you have no friends with a camera.. best you start chumming it up with a photographer... if she's cute and you can encourage her to pose in the pictures with the shelter, even better.
Prizes; All of us expanding our skills hands-on rather then in an armchair, and of course, getting a chance to get out there and experiment, compare and better ourselves.
Good luck brothers (and any sisters who join and are interested). Now let's get some building going on!

Sounds cool man! I think I may even do a video on mine. Just have to wait till my ideal conditions. Freezzing temps make for the best shelter construction in my book. You can tell where all the holes are hehehe. _________________ Always a Student, Never a Master. |

Sounds like we've got some challengers. Alright brothers, take your time and really push yourselves. Try to expand from the basics if possible. If you've build an a-frame debris hut a dozen times, time to not make one ;-) _________________ Only an idiot brings a knife to a gunfight. Well sir, I am that idiot. |

Sweet
The students this weekend made an IMMENSE debris hut.. never seen one like this in person.. was two A-frame debris huts facing eachother and connected with a side-entrance. Showed them how to make a "door-plug" and voila, shelter on steroids.. held 6 students (in sleeping bags), with room to move around!
Now all I did on it was make the door plug, so once more.. I have no picture... however...
My old Aussie friend "Wentwerth" is coming up tomorrow at 3:30 pm. I'm picking him up in Toronto and we're heading to Camp Mud for four days to let him acclimatize before going north until the 1st of December.
Our plan? Go to the Sheltercraft section of Kochanski's book "Bushcraft" and look for what he calls a Wooden Tepee..
Yeah.. that with two platform beds and a fire inside.. Bushcraft with style. ;-)
An if that don't work... well it will, cuz I say so and I have a big axe and a few thousand acres of "crown land" to gather the supplies from.. so itll damn well work brother.. _________________ Only an idiot brings a knife to a gunfight. Well sir, I am that idiot. |

Honestly I haven't started in the bush construction yet, but I have a few ideas on what and how I will build it. _________________ "Respect is the one thing money can't buy, it takes a long time to earn, but can be lost in the blink of an eye" |

It looks like I'm the FNG, I'd like to give it a shot. I've never done anything like this but this thread has got me thinking now. Hectic life may cause some delays but I'll definitely have photographic proof of the event. _________________ "Mediocrity can destroy us just as sure as perils far more famous." - ADM. Hyman G.
