There, I said it. John's heard my argument, now let's hear a discussion as to why this is true/untrue.

Hmmm....not sure but I'm thinking it may have something to due with the direction the animal is traveling or the angle of the sun. Can you explain a bit more clearly? Do they face those directions? Jeez I'm stumped.

Snares are more effective in the north Country (northeastern US, Canada, etc), deadfalls in the south (Arizona, New Mexico, etc).

Now, in the words of Mike Myers in Drag "Discuss"

So far that has been my findings. The easiest food source to catch here is rodents. Making dead falls more effective than snares. Also due to the lack of undergrowth in (most) most places the would be prey will just go around the snare no matter how well you fence it in. There are some areas that snares will work, but not in most of the areas I have been. when you are talking ten to twenty feet between bushes it is much easier to use a dead fall to catch rodents or make a rabbit stick to get rabbits. There is a way to place snares using a pole or spring pole. But like I said in most areas you would have to dig a hole for the pole and support it with rock. Still much easier to go after rodents using a dead fall. I am not a fan of snares in the desert. There are records of primitive man using them, but I prefer to stick to the dead fall. Its a calorie saving thing.

And up here it's the exact opposite. Most of the critters (fox especially) you could bait with a deadfall would smell the human on it, and avoid it.

Rabbits, squirrel, grouse, ptarmigan, partridge, hares, these suckers fall for snares like I fall for cake. And the only time you need to bait them, is for grouse/partridge/ptarmigan in the winter, just to hurry up the process.

Remember guys, up here, it's all woods.. any bait you could find out here is the same as the rest of the woods.. what is there to entice Roger Rabbit into your deadfall? On the other hand, I've seen hard stomped down trails, that they rarely, if ever, deviate from.

Ok guys , I have to admit, we have so much fish around here and I have been leaving traps and snaring for last. I have built the traps but not put a lot of time into traps. I would like to spend some time doing it this winter. Is there any literature you guys recommend on this skill ?

Thanks
-Rob

You know "Walks" on Myspace? Ask him for a copy of his Snares book. He wrote it himself, guy has snared everything from ground squirrel to white tailed deer in North Carolina and Virginia.

Now see those areas snares could work with relative ease.

Here in Oklahoma the snares would work well. Lots of undergrowth and vine type plants. when living in the desert in my youth, I tried snares with no luck. Here I used a bundle of viny plants in funnel web type thing and chased a cute fluffy bunny into it by throwing handfuls of pebbles at it. He got ensnared and stewed.

i am not saying they wont work period. I an just saying that with my experience I would rather stick to dead falls. There may even be some people that have had great success with snares here. Just not me.

I have had success with both, snares alot more so in Colorado but I have snared a few rabbits here in Az. As a matter of fact Jeff and I had a conversation about this on the phone a few days ago. Just so you guys know it took me about 2 full days to set up close to 100 snares and I only snared 3 rabbits.

With dead falls I have had success with mainly rodents, and a few lizards.

I think the most succesful trap I have usd in Az is the bottle neck trap, you can get just about any type of animal caught in there, and the best part is you don't have to dismantle it, just cover it with a rock and set it up again later when you are ready to use it again!! Next chance I get I will do a pictorial on some traps I have used.
