I went on my walk today in the hills around my home and took my camera with me. Turns out the little thing can take decent video, though only in short segments. I carry one of those credit card sized fresnel lenses in my wallet. I find it to be one of the easiest matchless methods of starting fires (provided the sun is out). With the right tinder and proper nest preparations it works like a charm. I decided to film a quick fire using my lens.
The nest was juniper bark, and the coal was formed from poop, jack rabbit poop. They eat the juniper berries so while you are gathering juniper bark for the nest, look around on the ground under the bows, chances are there are plenty of rabbit pellets. Pretty much any poo from a plant eating animal, once dried in the sun, works great. Mind you, the crushed pellets also take a spark real well from a ferro rod or can be used as a coal extender. If you can't find poop, then just take extra time to fuzz up your nest. I've started plenty of fires with juniper bark or grass nests as is with my fresnel lens or ferro rod. Also, you'll notice that I like to wrap a bit of bark around the nest to act as a handle help and keep it together . You can do this with a bundle of long grass, cattail leaves, twigs, whatever. Not only does it keep you from burning your fingers but it helps keep the nest, particularly the fine fluff in the middle, compact enough to accept and protect your coal while you blow it into flames.
Behold! My first Youtube vid!

(Please ignore the Darth Vader like breathing. My nose is plugged from allergies and I was holding the camera in front of my face) |

hahaha, nice, hey there HillyWilly
yeah, having fun with my video. Well, hey, even Bear Grylls uses poop for survival. Though he tends to suck the moisture from it or add it to his tea. |

| Interesting thing happened not to long ago, a wild fire was actually caused by spontaneous manure combustion. So poop seems to be great for fire tinder. |

| Hay bales will do the same. Something about the bacteria causing an endothermic reaction. In essence it's a chemical fire, or at least chemically ignited fire. |

| The Gerber LMF is one of my favorite fixed blades for its size. To start it has pretty good serrations and has a great thick penetrating tip. The blade its self is some type of scandvic steel but holds a good edge after i used my lansky diamond sharpener to re profile it. The handle has an awesome rubber over mold which is made to keep your hand from blistering. But if you notice their are 3 holes in the handle which are made so you can lash it to make a spear. Also the handle is non-conductive so you cant be electrocuted even cutting through hot wires. The pommel end is a glass breaker. The sheath itself rocks. It has every molle or leg attachment you can think of. Also is extremely secure in the sheath without the use of the 2 retention straps. But the sheath also contains an integral field sharpener. (i don't really ever use it unless i don't have my diamond rod with me). But it is fire resistant and uses snaps. And if you happen to get the ASEK model which only comes in forest green it has an infrared coating on the sheath and knife. Overall it wouldn't replace a kabar in overall possibilities but if your looking for something a bit smaller and more comfortable to carry that can still handle itself this is it. And if you have any more questions I'd be glad to awnser. |
